What e-Apostille means
An e-Apostille is an electronic apostille that is issued digitally and can often be verified via a register. It is not simply a scan of a paper apostille.
Acceptance is the key
Not every authority accepts e-Apostilles, and a printout may lose digital verifiability. Ask the receiving office for the PDF, signature and register link.
Digitally signed certificates
Some countries can electronically apostille digitally signed public documents. However, paper originals continue to play a major role in many Swiss processes.
Check e-register
For electronic apostilles, the number, issuer, date and signature details should be checked via the official verification site, not via third-party links.
Not every scan is digitally valid
A scanned paper document is not a digitally signed original. For a genuine e-Apostille, the electronic certificate or electronic apostille must be technically verifiable.
Paper procedures remain important
Many Swiss and international processes continue to work with paper originals, seals, stitching and physical returns. Especially if documents are sent by post to a court, consulate or registry office, you should not assume that PDF is sufficient.
Clarify acceptance beforehand
Ask the destination office whether it accepts an e-Apostille as a file, whether a printout is sufficient, which verification page should be used and whether a translation of the electronic note is necessary.

- Original, certified copy or private declaration?
- Apostille, legalization or just a certified translation?
- Does the apostille have to be translated itself?
- How current does the basic document have to be?
