Check apostille countries
Ob eine Apostille reicht, hängt vom Zielland und aktuellen Vertragsstatus ab. Die HCCH-Liste und die Schweizer Bundeskanzlei sind die wichtigsten neutralen Startpunkte.
EU is not a free pass
There are simplifications for certain public documents within the EU. However, Swiss documents and many special cases do not automatically fall under this category.
China, India, Canada, UAE, Thailand
China, India, Canada and the UAE are now apostille-relevant; In Thailand, legalization must be checked regularly. Nevertheless, the specific destination always decides.
Italy and Türkiye
For Italy and Türkiye, special forms of translation, consular requirements or local recognition are often required. Written clarification is particularly worthwhile when it comes to marriage, citizenship and legal proceedings.
The destination country is not the whole answer
Not only the country is important, but also the destination: university, registry office, court, consulate, bank or commercial register can have different requirements. An apostille can be legally sufficient and in practice still be supplemented by a formal requirement.
Non-Hague States
If the target country is not a contracting state or the agreement does not apply in relation to Switzerland, the route usually leads through legalization. Then additional authorities and the representation of the target country come into play.
Collect written requirements
For international procedures, a simple checklist is worthwhile: document name, desired language, original or copy, apostille or legalization, translator requirement and timeliness. This list prevents contradictory statements at the counter.
Practical exam
- Which country and which specific destination?
- Original, certified copy or private declaration?
- Apostille, legalization or just a certified translation?
- Does the apostille have to be translated itself?
- How current does the basic document have to be?
