Apostille for translations

Why the original document is usually apostilled and how translations are handled in the process. This page explains the practice without official German and points out the most common stumbling blocks.

In many cases, the original document is apostilled first and then the entire package is translated. The translation then also contains apostilles, stamps and marginal notes.

A translation is not automatically a public document. If an apostille is required for the translation, in Switzerland this often involves a translator's declaration, a notary and then an apostille on the notary's signature.

The order decides the destination

Some authorities require translation in the destination country, some require an apostille first, some also require a consulate. Therefore, ask about the order before sending originals.

Subsequent apostille

If the apostille comes after the translation and the destination office requires a translation of the apostille, an addendum or a new complete translation is required.
